Why Do People Sell a Car for $1

The short version

Insurance and taxes still go by the car's real value in most states. Tell your insurer right after the transfer and get the new owner their own policy before they drive it regularly.

Once you know who's keeping the car and who's taking over the policy, compare quotes so the new owner isn't overpaying.

If you do

You tell your insurer the car has a new owner and new primary driver. They update the policy or help start a new one, coverage stays accurate, and if anything happens on the drive home or soon after, there's no question about who was covered.

If you don't

The old policy stays in place with the wrong driver and address on file. If there's an accident before anyone updates it, the insurer may delay or dispute the claim since the person driving isn't who the policy expects. It gets sorted out eventually, but it costs time and stress.
